Home care for a parent with dementia

Dementia changes over time. The right agency plans for that, with consistent caregivers and a plan for harder days.

1

Describe a typical day

Tell agencies about routines, triggers and the times of day that are hardest. Late afternoon is often the toughest.

2

Ask about training and consistency

Ask what dementia training aides have and how many different caregivers your parent will see in a month.

3

Plan for more hours later

Ask whether the agency offers overnight and live-in care, so you do not have to switch agencies as needs grow.

Questions to ask on the first call

  • What dementia training do your aides complete?
  • How do you handle wandering or agitation?
  • Can you increase to overnight or live-in care?
