Checking an agency

How to check a home care agency’s license in New Jersey

Which state office registers which agencies, what the registration number means, and how to read an enforcement record.

6 min read. Updated October 1, 2026

Two kinds of agency, two state offices

Most agencies that send aides for companion and personal care are Health Care Service Firms. They register with the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs every year.

Agencies that send nurses and therapists under a doctor’s order are Home Health Agencies. They are licensed by the NJ Department of Health, and most are also certified by Medicare.

What to look for

An active registration or license. A suspended or revoked status means the agency should not be providing care.

Any public enforcement actions, such as civil penalties or consent orders. One older, corrected issue is different from a pattern.

Accreditation from CHAP, ACHC or The Joint Commission. It is voluntary in New Jersey and means an outside body has reviewed the agency.
