Paying for home care with NJ Medicaid (MLTSS)
New Jersey pays for in-home personal care through Managed Long Term Services and Supports. Approval takes time, so start early.
1
Check financial eligibility
Contact your county Board of Social Services or Area Agency on Aging. Income and asset limits apply, and there is a five-year look-back.
2
Complete the clinical assessment
A nurse assesses whether your parent needs nursing-home level of care. That is required for MLTSS home care.
3
Choose an in-network agency
Your managed care plan authorizes hours. Pick an agency that is contracted with that plan.
Questions to ask on the first call
- Which managed care plans are you contracted with?
- Do you help with the authorization?
- Can you start private pay while approval is pending?
